We spent the morning around the house. Kylie made us a German pancake for breakfast. We topped it with Ontario maple syrup…so tasty.
Stephen and Sarah worked on the radio for the boat.
We decided to drive up the hill in the afternoon. “….at an elevation of 1,487 m (4,879 ft) the road descends 43 km (27 mi) of steep, narrow road with sharp hairpin turns and two major switchbacks to the Bella Coola Valley. The descent includes a 9 km (5.6 mi) section with grades of up to 18% (about 1 in 6). The road is winding, in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered on one side by cliffs, and on the other side by a drop of up to 320 metres (many hundreds of feet), unprotected by guardrails. Tourists who have driven to Bella Coola from Williams Lake have been known to refuse to drive back and have had to be taken out by boat or float plane.”Information from Wikipedia
On the way up the hill, a truck had lost some of his wood. Stephen and Ron got out to help move the wood to the side of the road.
We went from 8 degrees at the bottom -2 at the top. There was still lots of snow.
The scenery was beautiful and sometimes heart stopping looking over the edge.
On the way down the hill, we stopped at the Big Rock for some pictures.
We went across the road and hiked around Kettle Pond. It was a vibrant green walkway with all of the moss on rocks and trees.
We took a little break at the Stupendous Lookout for more pictures.
Stephen noticed some garbage just over the fence and Sarah climbed over to pick it up.
As we left the steep inclines and windy, tight curves we stopped to watch a bear enjoying a spring meal. He seemed to not care about our presence but continued to graze. It was a perfect end to our road trip.
The locals often ask the question, “what did you think of the hill?” You can buy souvenirs that say that you survived the hill. We have now been here and done that!
We stopped at the grocery store and enjoyed looking around the stocked shelves. It had everything from hardware to fish bait, animal food to hair pieces and, of course, groceries.
We made tacos for supper and watched a hockey game. We took the dogs for a walk to make sure that I got my 10,000 steps.
